What is ginseng?

Ginseng is one of the Four Great Tonics of Eastern Medicine: Ginseng, Deer Antler, Cinnamon, and Rehmannia.

Ginseng is a general term referring to several types of herbaceous plants whose tubers and roots have been used as medicine for a very long time in many Asian countries. They belong to various genera and families, but mainly to the genus Panax. Many types of ginseng tubers resemble the shape of a human, especially the ginseng root. Ginseng is found in many places around the world – in Asia, Vietnam has the famous Ngoc Linh ginseng, China, South Korea, etc. The Americas also have ginseng.

Vietnamese Ngoc Linh ginseng is famous for having more saponins than Korean ginseng – but the production is extremely limited and hardly sold commercially due to insufficient cultivation to supply the market. The price is also very high compared to average income; 1 kg of genuine Ngoc Linh ginseng, depending on size, costs between 50-80 million VND. Even garden-grown ginseng is considered a high-end product.
