What is black ginseng? Why is it called black ginseng?

Black ginseng, also known as black ginseng (radix scrophulariae), is a refined product derived from ginseng, undergoing nine cycles of steaming and drying along with various other herbal ingredients. Gradually, the ginseng turns black, hence the name black ginseng. The multiple steaming and drying processes result in a significantly higher saponin content compared to red ginseng. Specifically, the steaming and drying process activates and promotes the metabolism of important saponins, significantly increasing the saponin content in the ginseng.

Black ginseng also comes in various forms, similar to red ginseng: black ginseng extract, black ginseng concentrate, dried black ginseng, etc.
